Communicating resilience and using ICTs for climate change adaptation webinar

​This webinar focused on how the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT's) in adaptation planning can enhance the adaptive capacity of local communities to climate change, as well as facilitate their engagement in local resilience-building actions. Practical examples of ICT solutions implemented in Bologna, Italy and Uganda were shared. 

John Yaist from Esri gave a brief introduction on the importance of ICTs for resilience, and share the outcomes of Esri and UNISDR's Global Disaster Resilience App Challenge. Download his presentation.

Piero Pelizzaro from Kyoto Club introduced the Blue AP(P), a web application which was developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Bologna, and discussed how the application can be utilized to inform citizens and stakeholders about climate adaptation and resilience, and actively involve them in data collection processes. Berhane Gebru from FHI 360 then shared his experience from the Climate Change Adaptation and ICT (CHAI) project in Uganda, where mobile and wireless technology was used to strengthen the capacity of individuals, communities and institutions to adapt to water-related impacts of climate change. Speaker Biographies

 

Piero Pelizzaro, Head of the International Cooperation Unit, Kyoto Club, Rome, Italy

Piero is a climate change adaptation policy specialist and an Acclimatise Associate. He is currently in charge of the International Cooperation Unit at Kyoto Club and is a member of the Working Group of Local Authorities for Kyoto. He has worked with the Stockholm Environment Institute and is recognized as an international expert on climate change adaptation policy, especially with regards to energy scenario and climate change impact models.
Piero is currently working on several high profile projects supported by the European Commission including the Adaptation Plan for Bologna (BlueAP). He also writes on climate change adaptation issues and has published in numerous magazines and online sources.

Berhane Gebru, Director of Programs, TechLab, FHI 360, Boston, USA

Berhane Gebru is the Director of Programs of FHI 360’s TechLab and has over 20 years of experience developing, managing and implementing projects in developing countries. Most recently, he has worked on projects involving the development and deployment of ICTs for improving adaptation to the impacts of climate change, the efficiency and cost effectiveness of data collection processes, and strengthening health and education systems. Mr. Gebru is one of the principal investigators of the Uganda Climate Change Adaptation and ICT (CHAI) project implemented in collaboration with Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment, FHI 360, Uganda Chartered HealthNet, IDRC, and Makerere University.​
